Best Business Hotel Loyalty Program for International Travel 2016-2017
Best Business Hotel Loyalty Program for International Travel:
Hilton HHonors’ victory here stems from the massive global network it can offer business travellers and the ease with which that network can be accessed for real benefits.
The program makes no distinction between the location of properties for the purposes of earning and redeeming points, which means you’ll get the same rewards whether you stay in Hong Kong or Huntington Beach.
You can climb on to the first rung of the elite status loyalty ladder after just four stays, and start adding a 20% bonus to your base point earnings, while also enjoying free internet.
And it still stands alone as the only loyalty program to let you earn both points and air miles from the same stay, under its My Way earning system.
But above all else, HHonors is about scale and there’s no chain that can outdo Conrad’s vision for global reach.
Members can earn and redeem points at 4,600 properties (hotels isn’t strictly the right terminology since the company switched its name to Hilton Hotels and Resorts), across 13 brands, located in 100 countries. And there’s a nice variety of hotel class to choose from within those thousands, ranging in price from the Waldorf Astoria to Homewood Suites.
By comparison, the Hyatt Gold Passport program includes just 630 properties. Even the sprawling Marriott Rewards program falls a good 600 properties short of the Hilton mark.
The same goes for HHonors web of partners.
The program has more than 60 airline and rail partners, which means you can convert hotel points to airline miles on a global scale. The Starwood Preferred Guest program, by comparison, offers 30 such partners.
And that’s where the My Way program of double-dipping points and miles comes into its own.
Basically every dollar you spend on a Hilton stay earns 10 base points plus a choice of either 5 additional bonus points or 1 air mile. It’s your choice to make, but HHonors lags behind its competitors in the ratio you’ll get on converting points to air miles later, so if you’re looking to boost your frequent flyer numbers take the air miles straight up. As an example, 10,000 HHonors points convert to just 1000 miles with United, so you’d be twice as better off taking that initial bonus offer of 1 mile over the 5 extra points.
And as a further word of warning, make sure you get in early if you do want to convert any of your HHonors points into miles because the process of switching between the two virtual currencies can be convoluted, and we’ve encountered more than a few lengthy delays in making the change.
But for an active traveller you just can’t beat that network. And remember, the majority of those destinations are in the US, so you needn’t be exclusively earning a living in Europe or Asia to make the most of the HHonors system.
Just stay active though, as your points can disappear if your account is dormant for 12 months.
